The School of Hard Knocks

The School of Hard Knocks, founded in 1980, is a collective of artists from diverse backgrounds and different art forms under the Artistic Direction of Yoshiko Chuma. Its purpose is to create, perform, encourage, and sponsor experimental and multi-disciplinary collaborative work. The School of Hard Knocks was conceived as an ongoing phenomenon – it’s shape as diverse as the situations the company performs in. Over the course of the company’s history, more than 2,000 people have performed under her direction in situations ranging from theatrical dance concerts to street performances, parades, and large – scale spectacles in the U.S., Europe, South America, Asia, and the Middle East. Some former members of the School of Hard Knocks include since 1980, Sasha Waltz, Meg Stuart, Sarah Michelson, Ursula, Eagly, David Zambrano, Jon Kinzel, Stephen Petronia DD Dorvillier, Jodi Melnick, Tatyana Tenenbaum, and many other artists.
