The “Secret Journey” project is an ongoing one. The “Secret Journey” series production started in 2016 at the National Gallery in Prague under Ai Weiwei’s exhibition: Law of the Journey which investigated the migration of Syrian refugees.
Acting as a twist title, “Secret Journey: Final Exam 5S” embodies the American idiom. Wikipedia defines Final Exam as: “A final examination, annual, exam, “final interview” or final is a test given to students at the end of a course of study or training. Although the term can be used in the context of physical training, it most often occurs in the academic world.”
What is “5S” at Dock 11?: Secret Festival, Secret Theater, Secret Audience, Secret Artist, Secret Journey. The “5S” concept is originally conceived in collaboration by, Yoshiko Chuma and Yoav Admoni founded at BetOnest, an artistic space Yoav founded in September, 2016. The location of BetOnest was given up in August, 2018. “5S” will be performed in many locations. It does not have home in one place; it is a floating production.
This will be the third work in progress to the “Secret Journey”, coming from “Secret Journey 1 – 2” in 2017; “Secret Journey: Stranger than Paradise” in 2018. Why a work-in-progress? All of these “Secret Journey” projects are leading to a marathon twelve day performance “Secret Journey: Dead End” at LaMaMa Experimental Theater in New York in 2020.
“Secret Journey: Final Exam 5S” results in a mosaic of dance, music, and integration of play with Yoshiko Chuma and the School of Hard Knocks productions. Stemming from a one – week residency leading to a four-day performance, the residency will serve to integrate artists from isolated countries that have political conflict in present 2019. Together, we’ll explore inside and outside viewpoints on real, ordinary, and physical experience to share to German audiences. Yoshiko Chuma is continuing a lifetime obsession with mythology of danger/border/immigration…assembling a journey of dance, music, and interview. Intentionally confusing documentation with history and recreating segments from past work – “Secret Journey: Final Exam 5S” investigates unique movement vocabulary and identity of each performer/dancer to offer alternate perspectives on rhythmic expression.
As a “Final Exam” each artist will present their own work. Performers/Dancers interact, but not directly–a parallel to incidents of life experience and a metaphor for endless continuous circles of life and war. All of the small actions and dances pinpoint the most important experiences and emotions of how the audience perceives and understand the results of war and why.
Fifteen cutting-edge cross disciplinary (Dance, Music, Film, Theater, Visual) artists from ten different countries assemble to create the cast for “Secret Journey: Final Exam 5S”. Four performances only, but each night will program a different configuration of the artists and will present the unique amalgamation they create together.
